Boston Museum of Fine Arts: History and Culture

Famous for its Egyptian and Asian collections, this century-old museum and has one of the largest Impressionist collections and houses nearly 450,000 pieces of art. Founded in 1870, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts attracts over one million people every year. Collections include Egyptian artifacts, French impressionist, post-impressionist, 18th and 19th century American art, a large collection of Chinese art, the largest collection of Japanese art outside of Japan, and a Japanese Garden. Guests can also partake in advanced educational programs and many special exhibitions year round. In fact, the museum is affiliated with the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, and satellite museum in Nagoya, Japan. Visitors can shop at one of three gift shops for some eclectic souvenirs and dine at one of four restaurants for tasty bites.

Wednesday through Friday: 10 am to 10 pm


Adults: $25; Seniors (65+), Students (18 ): $23
Children (6 and under): Free; Youths (7-17): $10 before 3 pm, free after 3pm and on weekends and school holidays

  • Who Is Eligible For Either Free Or Discounted Admission?

    All children under 6 and museum members receive free admission. For youths ages 7–17, admission is free during weekdays after 3 pm, weekends, and Boston public school holidays.
  • What Dining Is Available Onsite At The Museum?

    Visitors can choose between four restaurants at the museum, including Bravo serving seasonal artisanal cuisine, New American Café, which offers hot and cold small plates, Taste Cafe for wine, coffee, espresso, gourmet tea, and small bites, and lastly, The Garden Cafeteria which has a little something for everyone.
